CSIRIS Day Two

Tuesday 15th June 2010: Today was our first day back at Tuks(UP), we had a slow start to the day which I feel was attributed to the low morale of the group as we feel kind of left out from the others. Eventually though we got back into the groove of things and in my opinion we had a rather productive day in terms of the work done and getting comfortable with eachother. Due to the set back yesterday we spent most of the morning finalising the first deliverable and by lunch time we had concluded and proceeded to compile it and then upload to the Wiki Space.

The second deliverable is to investigate Web 2.0/social media tools and technologies and indicate what the purpose of each technology is and when it should be used (e.g. when is it better to use a blog rather than twitter, or the use of a wiki vs. a blog)
Tasks are as follows:
Define the concepts of Web 2.0, Social Media, Research 2.0 and Library 2.0
Investigate the purpose of Web 2.0
List the tools and technologies
Investigate the purpose and usage of these tools and technologies

Mathilda and I had to work together to define Research 2.0 and identify its history and what it entails in general, for a while I struggled to find relevant information about it as I kept finding information regarding Web 2.0 tools, this was frustrating especially since I made use of Google scholar,Science Direct and Emerald websites. So far I have retrieved the following information regarding Research 2.0: It was introduced in 2006 in order to reflect a shift away from the "old" command and control paradigm of market research towards a more collaborative approach between the brand, the researcher and most importantly the customer. The main objective of research 2.0 is to avoid the assumption that the people carrying out the research (researcher or organisation) know everything, instead it creates an opportunity for a two way discussion between the researcher and the client or customer being researched.

Research 2.0 is now developing into a term for a new perspective of research that uses the best of the zeitgeist to equip companies with more opportunities to make better business decisions. This includes making use of approaches such as blog research, social network studies, create-your-own research methodologies where consumers are invited to have their say beyond the bounds of regular surveys in online- discussion boards and advisory groups. The defining feature of these methods is that they utilise Web 2.0 platforms and the logic of collaboration to meet the client’s research needs.

This topic is really interesting and I intend to carry out more research to try and find actual tools or applications that can be used by the CSIR to further enhance the experience of employers when they use the RIA virtual spaces.

As tomorrow is a public holiday I'll be working through the data I found online and compiling it for further discussion when we get back to campus on Thursday. All in all today was a productive day, towards the end we had a group discussion and it was nice to see everyone putting in ideas on how to improve the way we research and also what more we could do to ensure that our project is successful. At this point I feel very enthusiastic about the project and am getting along well with my team members, the project leaders are also very approachable and are willing to help us whenever possible which is an bonus.Looking forward to continuing on Thursday!
