CSIR Day Three

Thursday 17th June 2010: After the disappointing game last night it’s no doubt most of us where in bad spirits today, 3 of our group members including myself weren’t feeling too well so that also had an impact on the amount of work we did also we didn’t have Phyllis here to cheer us up with her chirpy voice (Get well soon love :-). I started off the day by finishing up on the Research 2.0 examples and these were my findings:

Research 2.0 is rapidly gaining in popularity globally, particularly so in the US and Europe. Columinate offers the following Research 2.0 methodologies:
MROC Brochure: A visually illustrated PDF brochure explaining the method and its uses.MROC Whitepaper: A White paper exploring the technical aspects of the method and platform.Quantitative and Qualitative
· Advertising research
· Brand studies
· Campaign Evaluation
· Communication effectiveness
· Concept/Product testing
· Copy-testing
· Customer Satisfaction Research
· Employee satisfaction/organizational culture research
· Marketing effectiveness
· Music testing
· Price and price range determination
· Other: Bespoke/Custom research solutions tailored to your need
The following are a few other examples of social software that can be used by researchers:
Blogs, Wiki’s and Social Networks
Web-based office tools such as Google Docs
Virtual worlds, second life

My next task was to evaluate the concept of social media and the effect it has on research. Below is an overview of the information I found.
Definition of Social Media
Social media is a form of online media that expedites conversation as opposed to traditional media (television, newspapers), which deliver content but don't allow readers/viewers/listeners to participate in the creation or development of the content. In our context it can be described as a category of sites that are based on user participation and user-generated content. They include social networking sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, social bookmarking sites like Del.icio.us, social news sites like Digg and other sites that are focused on user interaction.
Purpose of Social Media
Social media can be seen as a tool that facilitates the process of sharing ideas, cooperating as well as collaborating with ones peers to create art, thinking and commerce, connecting with people in the same profession or with similar interests. Individuals can find information, inspiration, like-minded people, communities and collaborators faster than ever before which there makes a positive impact on how effectively research or work in general is carried out.
In essence in order to accomplish a cohesive working environment it is important for researchers and clients across each discipline or Research Impact Area to get together and co-design how they would ideally accomplish their goals and objectives. Overtime tools have been put in place to ensure that organizations have access to social media tools on Web 2.0 platforms such as LinkedIn, Meettheboss and scispace.net , if used effectively these tools can increase productivity as well as competitive advantage.
An example of social media is Really Simple Syndication (RSS), this is tool that allows people to subscribe to a blog or website. It notifies a ‘newsreader’ or your personal homepage or directly to an individuals desktop that there is new content available on a specified topic and sends the text and images. The user can then read these in their newsreader without having to visit the website itself. This service makes it significantly easy for researchers and clients to build or become part of online communities that have common work ethic or interests as this will provide valuable information that may lead to break through in research and good customer service.
Positive Impact
· Has the ability to bring the brand name (CSIR) to the customer and prospective customers, creating an environment suitable for business interaction
· Users of this service can easily share and update information relating to the project and or projects at hand, both within and outside the organization
· Increases transparency in government and organizations, as users are able to interact and analyze decisions made as well as progress of projects without having to personally visit the respective offices
Negative Impact
· Although social media serves as a vital form of connecting users and creating a good knowledge sharing it has its disadvantages. Bad news travels fast through this tool and may cause irreversible damage to the organizations reputation. Filters should be put in place to avoid the posting of comments from angry or disgruntled members of staff that may cause doubt in the minds of customers.
· The creation or implementation of a selected form of social media tool may give rise to a need for intensive labour, as people will be required to design, implement and maintain the selected application. In some case training may also be required which will take up a significant amount on time from staff.
· In connection with the previous point and other factors you might find that researchers may have problems with delivering content consistently, which in turn will cause a reliability issue especially in cases where queries are submitted by other researchers or a client.
In order to have successful use of social media the CSIR needs to ensure that the following measures are put in place and enforced in each research impact area.
· Information available for researchers or clients should be organised so that its easy to retrieve, use and understand
· Content should be relevant to the specific topic being researched in the respective Research Impact Area
· Be able to create relation tools
· Provide opportunities for users to make queries and get timely, relevant and reliable response
· Stay abreast of new developments to better enhance their service and also to maintain their customer base
At the end of the day we had covered most of the tasks involved in deliverable two, hopefully by the end of tonight everyone would have finalised their parts and uploaded it to the wiki space.
