On Monday 14th June 2010,we officially started our Internship at CSIR in the CSIRIS department. The project I'll be working on is Embedded Librarianship (P5),from the onset it promises to be an exciting project especially because now I can see that being a librarian isn't that bad a job after all.
We had our initial training on Friday 11th June, where we received our project plan,Maritz and I worked together, we had to read a few articles on Embedded Librarianship and deduce from them a meaning and what it involved these where my findings.
The concept of embedding implies a more comprehensive integration of one group with another to the extent that the group seeking to integrate is experiencing and observing as nearly as possible, the daily life of the primary group, it requires more direct and purposeful interaction.
It is imperative that a librarian has written and oral skills, as they will need to acquire information by conducting independent research in a conventional library setting and through the use of rapidly developing electronic technologies. They need to evaluate the reliability, accuracy and logical soundness of the information and make effective use of the information gathered.
A variety of partnerships and opportunities for dialogue can result in mutual respect and trust which in the end will bring about more productive usage of valuable literacy resources and expertise by the core user group.
In essence embedded librarians play a major leadership role, informs and improves the mission of the organisation for excellency in teaching and research. Core values of diversity and the value of interdisciplinary departments are reinforced and often championed by librarians. The recognition of the the power of embedding, integrating and collaborating leads to amazing innovations in the organisation that would not exist without the influence and leadership role of librarians.
The summary above will be further enhanced in the work we do later today, we had a problem with accessing the wireless Internet service at CSIRIS which set us back in the extra work we could have done through further research online. Sadly we had to move back to campus(UP),while it allows us a chance to do our work better my group members and I feel somewhat deprived of the full learning experience at CSIRIS,however we are determined to carry on working hard throughout the course of the project.
